Description

This cul-de-lampe closes the short story devoted to the destiny of Anne Bell and her lover Syndham. Married in secret, then rejected by their families, they have been through misfortune and misfortune. Syndham dies first, and Anne follows close behind, not without writing a last letter to her father at death's door. He finally grants her forgiveness, but arrives too late to witness her last moments.

In memory of his daughter, he takes in their orphaned child. As an adult, he founded a hospital on the very spot where his mother died, intended to take in all victims of misfortune. He also had a statue of her erected, which he often came to contemplate, as shown here.
