Sélicourt, cul-de-lampe (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol2) - Binet after Eisen

Description

This allegorical cul-de-lampe closes the short story Sélicourt. Two putti embrace while weeping, while a snake is trodden under their feet. The image can be read as a symbolic transposition of the story: the Marquise de Menneville and Baroness Darmilli, both infatuated with the same man, have chosen to overcome their jealousy to support each other in their impossible loves.
