Adelson et Salvini, cul-de-lampe (Baculard d'Arnaud, The Trials of Emotion vol2) - Massard after Eisen

Description

This allegorical cul-de-lampe seems to illustrate the moral of the short story Adelson and Salvini. A newborn baby is suckled by a fury who holds out a dagger, while two other infernal creatures feast on snakes. The whole can be read as a symbol of Salvini's murder: a crime born of jealousy, which was nurtured and strengthened in the shadows before its devious execution.
