Description
The story of Sargines is taken up allegorically in this cul-de-lampe. At first apathetic, he eventually emerges from his indolence and trains himself in the demands of chivalry thanks to his love for Sophie de Joinville.
In the center, the awakening child embodies Sargines extricating himself from his initial inertia, and the hourglass at his side underscores the time he has lost. He is awakened by love, represented by the putto wielding a torch. The child immediately extends his arms towards the putto carrying the book of glory. On the left, a rooster heralds the awakening of the future French Arch.
