Description
Zenothemis was to marry Agatha, but she chooses to renounce their union so that he can marry Cydipus, whose father has been unjustly compromised in a case of corruption. Menecrates, a respected judge, has been dishonored by a false accusation. Desperate at the thought of not being able to marry his daughter - who was to be his support in old age - he can only rely on Zenothemis' friendship. Understanding Menecrates' distress, Agatha generously decides to withdraw, allowing Zenothemis to console the old man and save him from infamy by marrying Cydipus.
The vignette may represent the moment when Cydipus, on the left, and Zenothemis, on the right, seal their union before an altar, under the tender gaze of Menecrates.
.- Signed and dated under the engraving on the left "c. Eisen in.", on the right "n. ponce s. 1773".
