Description
Commander Waroménil has left Paris to settle in his Gothic château at the foot of the Pyrenees. Before getting there, he stops off at the home of the Marquise de Belbonne, who lives not far away, between Collioure and Port-Vendres. For many years now, the Marquise has retreated to her château with a few servants, in order to conceal some debasing secrets. In her youth, she had a child by a seducer who then managed to keep her away from her family. Later remarried and widowed, she moved her son, Paul, to a farm next to her estate. Unaware of his true origins, and believing her simply to be his benefactress, Paul visits her every day, bringing her a bouquet of flowers.
In the image, the commander questions the identity of this young boy, who seems a little silly to him, and the baroness is content to tell him his first name without revealing the secret of his birth.
