Description

Bacon is said to have borrowed these "Figures on the march" from an illustration depicting Egyptian soldiers in Amédée Ozenfant's Foundations of Modern Art, Dover Publications, 1952.

Is the animal placed atop the large parallelepiped a bear or a man? It has sometimes been identified with the Russian bear, and the painting as a metaphor for the Cold War and the Suez crisis, but there is no consensus on this reading.
