The collapsing carter (Simolachri..., Lyon, 1549) - Hans Holbein

Description

Corruit in curru suo, he collapsed on chariot. The quotation, borrowed from the Second Book of Kings (the reference given above the image is wrong), is diverted from its meaning. In the Binle it refers to Jehu's murder of Jehoram, paving the way for his usurpation of power.

Joram understands that Jehu has betrayed him and flees in his chariot, but Jehu hits him with an arrow. The royal chariot here becomes a modest cartwright's wagon.
