Description

The triptych draws on models from the 14th and 15th centuries: Sartorio's letters preserved at the Primoli Foundation evoke Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise and Pisanello's frescoes at San Fermo in Verona. But Sartorio also drew inspiration from Giuseppe Cellini's decorations on a similar theme at Rome's Galleria Sciarra, completed in 1888. For the execution of the figures, the painter used photographic portraits of several women of the Roman nobility of the time, including Maria D'Annunzio Gallese, the Marquises Theodoli and Sanfelice, Princess Odescalchi.

History :

2. The triptych was commissioned in 1890 by Count Giuseppe Primoli as a wedding present for his bride-to-be; but the wedding did not take place and the Count did not pay for his commission.
Shown at the 1899 Venice Biennale, the painting was purchased in 1939 by the Governorate of Rome.
