Description
The Simoun (or semoun) is a hot sandy wind sweeping across the desert, found east of the Mediterranean. The sand-laden air takes on reddish hues.
The scene depicted is that of a caravan with its tents and camels stopped by a sandstorm looming on the right. In the foreground, a group of figures sitting behind their bundles for protection, including a woman, her daughter and her husband.
To the right, already overtaken by the storm, a shepherdess attempts to bring two goats back to the caravan.
