Then Satan first knew pain,
And writhed him to and fro. (Book VI, 327-328)
The archangel Raphael tells Adam and Eve about the rebellion of Lucifer's army.
During the confrontation between the rebellious angels and the angels loyal to God, Lucifer comes face to face with the archangel Michael. The latter's sword, animated by divine power, deeply wounds his adversary, who experiences pain for the first time.
