Leviathan (Milton's Paradise Lost, 1866) - Gustave Doré

Description

And seems a moving land; and at his gills
Draws in, and at his trunk spouts out, a sea. (Book VII, 415-416)

The archangel Raphael tells Adam and Eve about Creation.

On the fifth day, God creates the sea animals, among them Leviathan, one of the largest and most fearsome living creatures, a symbol of the forces of chaos that only God can tame. Its depiction as a sea dragon makes it an image of Satan, the symbolic figure of evil destined to be vanquished by God.
