Description
Clarisse, no longer determined to leave with Lovelace as she had originally agreed, argues with him outside the garden gate, after having been dragged out (CH1985, L94 pp. 372-383; CH1999I, pp. 532-537). In keeping with the text, the key to the door is visible on the threshold, remaining within reach of Clarisse's hand; after attempting to drag Clarisse out, Lovelace yielded to the girl's entreaties and crossed his arms to show his good will.
