Description
21st figure.
Subject. Edmond, watching his wife, whom he saw leaving to go into the garden, where she went to hide under a trellis: Mr Parangon followed her to act out the scene that is the subject of the print. Manon cries out, signalling to Mr Parangon with the corner of her eye that they have been seen, and to play his part well.
"Mrs Parangon had just left us to go and welcome her aunt Canon, who was bringing Ursule to us, when Mr Loiseau called me. While he was talking to me, I saw Mr Parangon slip after my wife, who was going into the garden. A jealous and very violent impulse made me follow them. My wife was walking very quickly towards a cradle, but she did not notice her cousin's husband. I took another route and got ahead of her, so that I had time to hide in the foliage. My wife sat down as she entered; she raised her eyes to the sky, and tears ran down her cheeks..." (ed. François Jost, L'Age d'homme, 1977, vol. 1, p. 202-3)
