Description

First illustration: Frontispiece of Part 1.

Subject. For the frontispiece of the first volume, we chose a subject that precedes the young peasant's arrival in the city: it is provided by Edmond himself, in the story he tells his brother Pierre about an occasion when he gave Fanchon, his elder brother's mistress, a drink. The young peasant is in a sainfoin field, busy haymaking; the subject of the print is Edmond presenting a barrel full of water to the young girl, who asked him for a drink.

History :
  1. Signed lower left ‘L. Binet inv[enit]’, lower right ‘L. Berthet sculpsit’. At the top, on the banner held by the genius, we read ‘LE PAYSAN’ (THE PEASANT) and, half hidden, ‘PERVERTI’ (PERVERTED).
  2. Volume I. Frontispiece plate for Part One.
  3. Based on the model of Jacob and Rachel at the well?
