Description
First illustration: Frontispiece of Part 1.
Subject. For the frontispiece of the first volume, we chose a subject that precedes the young peasant's arrival in the city: it is provided by Edmond himself, in the story he tells his brother Pierre about an occasion when he gave Fanchon, his elder brother's mistress, a drink. The young peasant is in a sainfoin field, busy haymaking; the subject of the print is Edmond presenting a barrel full of water to the young girl, who asked him for a drink.
History :
- Signed lower left ‘L. Binet inv[enit]’, lower right ‘L. Berthet sculpsit’. At the top, on the banner held by the genius, we read ‘LE PAYSAN’ (THE PEASANT) and, half hidden, ‘PERVERTI’ (PERVERTED).
- Volume I. Frontispiece plate for Part One.
- Based on the model of Jacob and Rachel at the well?
