Description
Lovelace leads Clarissa away from the family estate to the carriage he has prepared to take her away. Clarissa follows him, frightened by Leman's cries: Lovelace's accomplice, he pretends that the Harlove family is arriving and feigns chasing the couple. Lovelace has drawn his sword to oppose his enemies; Clarissa turns back towards the door (CH1985, pp. 379-380; CH1999I, p. 540-541, p. 570).
‘Oh God!’ cried the poor fool, ‘Help, help!’ in a state of terror and confusion that prevented her from doing anything to resist! My eyes, filled with fear, darted around me, front and back, expecting to see a furious brother here, armed servants there, a sister in a rage screaming shrill cries, a father sparkling with fury, more terrible in his appearance than the sword I saw naked, and than all those I feared. I ran as fast as he did, without realising how fast I was running.
