Clarissa is summoned before the Harlowe family assembly to give an account of Lovelace's visits to her while she was staying with her friend Miss Howe. Clarissa's brother James has his arm in a sling as a result of the injury Lovelace inflicted on him in a duel. Clarissa turns away and pulls out her handkerchief to cry.
