Description
1763 Salon Booklet:
By Mr. Vernet, Academician.
89. View of the Port of Rochefort; taken from the Magasin des Colonies. The building on the right, at the front of the painting, is the rope factory; those in the background at the other end of the port are the warehouses. We see a ship being heated for careening, a ship in the shipyard, and another in a basin awaiting repair. The foreground of the painting is near the Magasin des Colonies, where supplies destined for the colonies have been painted. Hemp is being unloaded and transported to the rope factory, from which ropes are coming out to be loaded onto ships. It is the moment of departure for a squadron. The tide is high, and it is morning.
Special edition of Le Mercure de France, Sept. 63, p. 41:
We have no words, and it would be difficult to find any to express the admiration we have for the works exhibited by Mr. Vernet and to celebrate their rare merit. They consist of two large paintings, one depicting the Port of Rochefort and the other that of La Rochelle∞
