94. Madame la Comtesse d'Egmont.
This is probably the painting that Diderot refers to in his Essays on Painting when he writes:
Here is a woman dressed in white satin on a canvas. Cover the rest of the painting and look only at the clothing; perhaps the satin will seem dirty, dull, and unrealistic. But restore this woman to her surroundings, and at the same time the satin and its colour will regain their effect. (Hermann, p. 22.)
The birth name of the Countess d'Egmont Pignatelli was Jeanne-Sophie de Vignerot du Plessis.
2. The painting was kept at the Château de Dampierre. The countess depicted here is Jeanne Sophie Elisabeth Louis Septimanie du Plessis Richelieu, Countess of Egmont Pignatelli (1740–1773).
3. There is a smaller version of this painting (43x31 cm) commissioned by Louis-Philippe for the Versailles Historical Museum in 1840. Versailles, National Museum of the Château and Trianons, MV 4444; INV 2288; LP 4483.
