Grégoire de Tours, Miracula septem libri (circa 570)

History :

2. The painting, painted in 1758 for the church of Bellefonds near Rouen, is not held by the Musée de Rouen. This sketch was acquired in 1961. At the time, it was attributed to Boucher, whose son-in-law Deshays was.

3. It must be said that Boucher had painted an Assumption of the Virgin very similar to this painting ten years earlier. It belonged to the personal collection of his son-in-law Deshays and was sold on his death in 1765. It is now in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. There is another sketch of Deshays' painting at the Musée Magnin in Dijon and one at the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.
