" The subject of the Tableau de la Bergere des Alpes is taken from M. Marmontel's Contes moraux. M. Vernet has taken the moment when Adélaïde, recounting her misfortunes to the young Fonrose, shows him[47] her husband's grave: the weeping of this Bergere, the generous sensibility of her Lover are well expressed in this piece, & the landscape in which this touching scene takes place, is very-beautiful.
