Paolo Veneziano draws inspiration here from a Byzantine iconographic model: the Virgin Platytera (literally, "wide") is a Virgin in majesty, depicted as Queen of Paradise, carrying Christ on her lap (with or without mandorla) and opening her arms in welcome. Usually, only the upper body is represented. First of all, the Virgin is not depicted from the front, but at a slight angle, which introduces a certain depth, despite the traditional golden background. But the most daring transformation is that the Virgin's arms are lowered rather than raised. Here, the Virgin welcomes not the actual churchgoers face to face, but the devotees depicted kneeling at bottom left, wrapped in her cloak. In a way, Paolo Veneziano has blended the Byzantine model of the Platytera with the more recent Italian model of the Virgin of Mercy.
