Description
J. de Voragine cites contradictory sources, some claiming that Bartholomew was flayed by King Astyages, to punish him for having converted his brother, others asserting that he was crucified (Saint Theodore), or beheaded. "These different opinions can be reconciled by saying that he was first crucified, then taken down from the cross before dying, and that to add to his tortures, he was flayed and finally had his head cut off." (GF, t2, p. 129.)
