The Madonna of Carmel - Tiepolo
Description
The subject of this composition is the cult of the scapular, a type of stole worn by Carmelites and Carmelites.
On the left an angel points souls to the Virgin, on the right, whose worship alone can obtain their salvation. Mary leans against an altar on which she holds the infant Jesus. Behind them, Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem is followed by an angel holding his crozier and two hooded penitents.
At Christ's feet kneel in adoration on the left a Carmelite nun, St. Teresa of Avila, on the right a Carmelite, St. Simon Stock to whom the Virgin hands his scapular. Behind the saint, the prophet Elijah and two cherubs stand out.
