Description
The abduction of mortals by the gods (here Castor and Pollux) is an allegory of the soul's ascent to heaven. On ancient sarcophagi, this unusual scene allegorized the salvation of the soul. Cupid holds the horse's reins, sealing the union of celestial and temporal love? Rubens was inspired by John of Bologna's Abduction of the Sabines, a Mannerist sculpture visible in Florence's Piazza della Signoria.
