mockings of Christ, who may be blindfolded
The iconography of the Mocking of Jesus can be compared with that of the Ecce homo, that of The Crowning of Thorns and that of the Flagellation.
- Christ at the outrages (1st appearance before Pilate) is normally depicted seated blindfolded, as specified in Luke's Gospel.
- The Ecce homo is presented standing by Pilate to the crowd; but Christ is alone in some Ecce homo.
- In The Crowning of Thorns (2nd appearance before Pilate), Christ is not blindfolded; he is clothed in mockery in a purple cloak, as the Gospel of John makes clear.
- In the Flagellation (also the 2nd appearance before Pilate), Christ is tied upright to a column and whipped.
These iconographic differences are tenuous, and as a result the scenes are often confused.
