Description
Booklet from the 1757 Salon:
"By M. La Grenée, Academician.
[...] 84. A painting measuring 2.5 feet wide by 2 feet high. It represents Erminia, lover of Tancredi. She meets him dying after the battle he had fought against Argante. Grieving, she visits and dresses his wounds.
This painting is from the Cabinet de M. Damery. "
History :
3. Was Lagrenée inspired by Pier Francesco Mola's (1650-1660) painting of the same subject? Mola had imagined the horse surprising the scene (Musée du Louvre, inv. 399.)
Engraved by Jacques Firmin Beauvarlet probably in 1761 (advertised in the Mercure of July 1761), see British Museum, 1917,1208.1288; Bnf Estampes, FOL-DC-7.
