Orlando kills Cimosco despite his harquebus (Orlando furioso, Brunet 1775, c.9) - Cochin

Description

Sent by Olimpia to Dordrecht, where Cimosco is holding his lover Bireno prisoner, Orlando kills him (IX, 80) before he can even turn his disloyal weapon, the rifle, against him.    
Orlando is on foot, as the first shot has killed his horse (str76-77). The spectators watching the battle from the town's windows are an innovation both in terms of the text and the ancient engravings: they transform the epic performance into a scenic device. The restricted space of the stage is delimited by the curb below, by Cimosque's rifle above.
