Rinaldo kills Polinesse and saves Ginevra (Orlando furioso, Plassan 1795, c.5) - Cochin
Notice précédente Notice n°3 sur 3
Description
Ginevra loves Ariodante and is loved by him. Polinesse, who loves Ginevra, seduces her maid Dalinda and persuades her to wait for him on the palace balcony, dressed in her mistress's clothes. At the same time, he persuades Ariodante that Ginevra has deceived him by swearing love and loyalty. Let him stand under the balcony in the evening: he'll see that it's Polinesse she's waiting for and loves. Deceived by the night and the garment, Ariodante flees in despair. Lurcanio, Ariodante's brother and witness to the scene, accuses Ginevra of infidelity in front of the king. Scottish law is clear: Ginevra must die, unless a knight comes to her defense. Rinaldo volunteers. He learns the truth of Ginevra's innocence from Dalinda, kills Polinesse in single combat and reunites Ariodante, miraculously saved from suicide, with Ginevra.
The scene depicts Polinesse's death. Behind, the masked rider is Ariodante, still incognito. Among the spectators are a grieving Ginevra and her father, the King of Scotland, delighted at the turn of events.
