The death of Louis VIII (Daniel, History of France, 1729 ed. t3)

Description

Louis VIII cœur de lion (1187-1226), king of France from 1223 to 1226. Louis VIII would rather die than save his life by a mortal sin. Louis VIII is ill, and his doctors assure him that only the defloration of a virgin could cure him. He preferred to die. Lying on his bed, he points with his right hand to the girl and refuses her to his confessor. With his left, he points to Heaven, which forbids him to commit such a crime. On a stool in the right foreground, the sword and crown, emblems of royal glory, are weighed against the life-giving maiden. In the background, on the left, soldiers are leaving for war: it's the crusade against the Albigensians.

History :
  1. Signed below the engraving on the left "Boucher inv. et delin.", on the right "Baquoy féc.". Legend under the signature: "Louis VIII would rather die than save his life by a mortal sin".
  2. This engraving does not appear in the original edition of Father Gabriel Daniel's Histoire de France, 1713, 3 vols. where the reign of Louis VIII occupies the last chapter of the 1st volume, col. 1453-1454. See Arsenal, FOL-H-1665 (1). Boucher was commissioned to produce a series of drawings for a new edition of the Histoire de France, announced in a prospectus, Paris, rue Saint-Jacques, 1721 (Bnf Joly de Fleury-2491, fol. 244). But this engraving does not appear in the edition printed by Mariette in Paris in 1722 (tome III, p. 169: the chapter devoted to Louis VIII is adorned with a conventional allegorical engraving, representing the monarchy on its throne. Cote Bnf 4- L35- 120 B,1 à 7).
This is apparently the edition of Paris, Mariette, 1729 in 10 vols. In-4°, see vol.3. Bnf L35-120 (C) and Arsenal 4-H-2592 (1).
The 1755 edition by Libraires associés à Paris replaces the 1722 scenes with medals (Bnf L35- 120 (E,1 à 17).
