Fountain of Life - Master of the Fountain of Life
Description
The allegory represents the mystery of the Eucharist as a celebration of the Resurrection. The fountain is placed at the site of Christ's Cross at the moment of the Passion, between the crosses of the two thieves. At the center of the fountain, Christ lifts the lid of his tomb and emerges resurrected. His blood gushes from his chest and fills the fountain. Angels distribute Christ's blood in chalices. In the center foreground, Father Clemenssoen receives the chalice. The other faithful are hierarchically arranged according to the social hierarchy of the time: first the dignitaries of the Church, then in the background the representatives of temporal power, finally, in the background, the common people.
2. This panel was to serve as an epitaph for Father Clemenssoen, who died in 1511.
