The prince and pontiff of Utopia (More, Utopia, 1715)

Description

"The Prince himself is distinguished neither by royal robes, nor by a diadem, nor by a crown: he is recognized only by a handful of wheat that His Utopian Majesty customarily carries in his hand; and by this bouquet, incomparably more precious than that of the rarest and most fragrant flowers, this monarch, if there is such a thing as a monarch, symbolically indicates that his essential duty is to feed his subjects and make them happy. Good heavens, what a difference between Prince and Prince! The respectable, venerable mark of the Pontiff is a lighted candle carried before his most sacred face."
