History :
1. Signed and dated lower left: "J. Vernet f 1769".
2. According to Else-Marie Bukdahl, this painting is not the Clair de lune from the 1769 Salon drawn by Saint-Aubin and commented on by Diderot.
Ancien cabinet de Longivilliers, Montreuil-sur-Mer (according to the engravings). Acquired by Alexandre Ier, from Pirling et Cie, Saint Petersbourg, 1803. Cat. Ingersoll Smouse, no. 904. 3.
Has as its counterpart a "Vue des environs de Reggio en Calabre", also in the Hermitage. Both paintings engraved by Dufour. Compare with "La Nuit", cat. Ingersoll-Smouse, no. 294 (1750, coll. Lewis and Simmons, Paris).
