Description
The originality of this fresco lies in the fact that the composition focuses on Angelique's exposed, naked body, rather than on Roger's traditional fight with the killer whale (in fact, Roger riding his hippogriff is present at the top of the fresco, but I haven't found a reproduction). The paleness of the colors blurs the contours of the spaces. There is no restricted space in the scene: our eye is immediately confronted with Angélique's body, without breaking in. Another logic of the gaze is put in place, a perverse, sado-masochistic scopic logic: faced with Angélique, who seems to recommend herself to Heaven one last time before dying, the spectator's eye can only identify with the orca's mouth. We devour this gracefully arched, offered body with our eyes, just as the orca might devour Angélique.
3. Angélique seems curiously represented here on the model of a repentant Madeleine...
