Royal session of the Estates General, Mirabeau and the Marquis de Dreux-Brézé, June 23, 1789 - Nicolas-Auguste Hesse

Description

The image is a detail of the (very large) canvas.

During this session, Mirabeau is said to have uttered the famous phrase:

"Go and tell the king that we are here by the will of the people and that we will only get out by the force of bayonets."

History :

2. Hesse won the prize in the competition organized in 1830 by Guizot. The canvas was to adorn the Salle des Séances at the Assemblée Nationale with the Oath of Louis-Philippe and Boissy d'Anglas facing the severed head of Féraud. The triptych was intended to symbolize the political equilibrium that had emerged from the revolution of 1830: it no longer made sense under the 3rd Republic.
The painting was sent to Amiens, France. The painting was sent to Amiens in 1891, and is now on display on the second floor of the town hall.
