Clairette presents Alexis with the Maisonnette (Alexis, t2, 1789) - Berthet after Bornet

Description

Alexis, an abandoned orphan, has just moved in with Condor, who lives in a small house protected by high walls with his daughter Clairette and their servant Germain. They decide to take a walk around the outbuildings to show Alexis around: Clairette takes the lead and shows him the garden, a beautiful poplar tree - placed here in the center of the image - and a stream crossed by a small bridge, before expressing her joy at seeing him settle with them, while Condor and Germain join them. Strangely, the caption replaces Clairette's name with Géorgette: perhaps this reveals Ducray-Duminil's hesitation over the choice of the character's name?
