Description
In the article surrounding the engraving, Dumas recounts how he received this "bois fait d'après une photographie de moi" in the mail.
Although Dumas mentions Nadar's name on the following page, the photograph that served as a model is rather Watkins', executed during his visit to Victor Hugo in Guernsey in 1857. The vest motif is indeed characteristic, as is the serious, almost disgruntled air, whereas NAdar's photographs present a rather smiling Dumas.
