Agnes's plans are discovered (The Monk, t1, Favre, 1797) - Patas after Langevin
Notice n°1 sur 4 Notice suivante
Description
Agnès, who has been forcibly confined by her aunt in a Madrid convent, conspires with her lover Don Raymond to escape. During Ambrosio's confessions to the nuns, she accidentally drops the letter detailing her crimes. Ambrosio picks it up and reads the proof of Agnes' pregnancy. Listening only to his implacable rigor, he gives the letter to the abbess, who fulminates with rage: the austere abbess takes the monk for a model of perfection and is displeased to see a nun under her supervision fail in her duties. Agnes, seeing the situation turn against her, first lashes out at the monk and prophesies his downfall: she unmasks him, denouncing a virtue that is but a decoy and hides inordinate pride.
On the picture, the abbess points to the letter demanding an accounting from Agnes, who tries to justify herself, while Ambrosio cowardly exculpates himself with a gesture.
