The Marquis de St Alban kisses the hand of Victorine de Loewenstein (L'Émigré, t4, Fauche, 1797) - Darnstedt after Du Pré

Description

The Countess Victorine de Loewenstein has just lost her husband, an older man she respected out of duty but didn't love. This makes it possible to marry the French émigré she's loved since the beginning of the novel, the Marquis de St Alban. He didn't dare put himself forward to respect his lover's mourning, but Victorine's uncle, the Commandeur, facilitates their meeting by leaving them both alone. In fact, he accompanies the marquis to Victorine and slips away with his sister, thus Victorine's mother, on the pretext of a walk to leave them to chat.
