Description
This is the first scene of the novel: after a battle between revolutionary French and monarchist Austrians, a French Hussar encounters a dying soldier on the battlefield. The soldier is an émigré, and he asks for his life. He faces the guillotine in France if taken prisoner by the Revolutionaries, and wants to avoid this infamy at all costs. Despite his insistence, Francœur, the Hussar, saves his life.
