The hermit stands in front of d'Arembert (L'Hermite, t3, Ménard, 1816) - Simonet after Sonna

Description

D'Arembert has captured Eleanor, whom he desires and with whom he wants to marry. Despite her refusals, he leads her fainting to the altar, but this is without counting on the surprise appearance of a hermit who confuses d'Arembert: the hermit is actually Berenger, his own brother whom he thought he had killed long ago. The clouds visible in the engraving don't mean that Bérenger is a ghost, although he does appear as a revenant; rather, they refer to the machinery used to make him appear on stage through secret passages, as in a lyric opera.
