Description
On a stormy day, Pastor Godfried Haustein takes refuge in his township church with his ward Sophie, whose birth forms one of the novel's mysteries. He shows her a few epitaphs until he reaches the tomb of Alexovina Dusseldorf, the former wife of the Count of Dusseldorf.
The sight of this tomb petrifies the pastor, reminding him of the secret crimes of the Dusseldorf family. Sophie then seeks to remove him from the scene.
