Description
The Countess of Dusseldorf, second wife of the Count of Dusseldorf, visits with her friends - young Sophie, Chevalier Geisler, Mademoiselle Richter and the Count of Dusseldorf's nephew Conrade - the abandoned castle of Carlostein, in which serious crimes are said to have taken place, including the murder of Colonel Ferdinand of Dusseldorf by his brothers. As they visit the castle, they discover several skeletons littering the floor or hanging from the walls on hooks: they are terrified that Ferdinand's remains may be right in front of them.
.1. Signature a little faded lower left, "binet", right, "mariage".
Caption: "She made a piercing cry and went out | with haste."
3. The engraving perhaps plays with the theme of the danse macabre from medieval art.
