Schoolchildren's game (goose game) - Jean
Description
44-square goose game. The course runs from the start of class under Minerva's protection (box 1) to the prize-giving, where the goddess's owl awaits the winner (box 44).
Three types of vignette are represented:
- 25 game scenes,
- 10 allegories of the subjects taught (reading and writing, Latin and Greek, logic, rhetoric...)
- 9 punishments for the dunce ranked in order of severity, from the ferule to "the schoolboy having to carry water cans" to the dunce cap.
Among the games: Le Cheval Fondu, Les Cervolants, Le Diable Boiteux, Le Jeu de Siame, Le Jeu de la toupie, Le saut du Mouton.
Other games are represented in the corners: Le Tourniquet, La Double Basseculle, Les Armes, La Declamation-Fanfan and Colas, Pièce en un acte.
Inscription in lower margin: "A Paris chez Jean, rue St Jean de Beauvais, 10".
In the center: "Règles du Jeu. We agree on what we want to play and pay at encounters. This game consists of 44 numbers. The first to reach the N° where the distribution of Prizes is, won by Science wins the game, but you only reach this number after having overcome all the obstacles and encounters that oppose it; each player takes 2 dez [dice] and having thrown them once for himself, he scores as many points as are brought to him by the dez; the marks must be different so that each player recognizes his own. You can't stop at the Allegories of Sciences and Arts; when you encounter them, you have to go past them and double the point until you don't encounter any more.
Whoever on the first stroke of the dez makes 6 where the Schoolboy, receives the ferule, will pay the agreed price and go to N° 10, to study his lesson.
Whoever on the first stroke of the dez makes 9, by 6 and 3, or by 5 and 4, will go to N°26 where the Schoolboys play Ball.
He who goes to N°15 where the Schoolboy with the Donkey Ears is, will pay the agreed price and stay there until another with the same N° replaces him.He who goes to N°19 where the Schoolboy is kneeling will pay the agreed price and stay there until another bringing the same point comes to relieve him.
He who goes to N°28 where there is a Schoolboy in the Dungeon with bread and water will pay the agreed price and stay there until his Companions have played twice.
He who goes to N°33 where there is a Schoolboy tied to the Post will pay the agreed price and stay there until another bringing the same point removes him.He who goes to N°39 where is the Schoolboy driven out of the College, will also pay the agreed price, he will go back to N°1 and start the game again.
He who goes to N°42 where is the Schoolboy condemned by Military discipline to carry the Cans filled with water to the fountain, will withdraw from the game, after having paid the Game he has lost."
