Description
"I am made of shadow and marble.
Like the black feet of the tree,
I sink into the night.
I listen; I am underground;
From below I say to the thunder:
Wait! don't make a sound.
I who am called the poet,
I am in the silent night
The mysterious staircase;
I am the staircase Darkness;
In my funereal spirals
The shadow opens its vague eyes.
The torches will become candles.
Respect my virgin degrees,
Pass on, the merrymakers of the day!"
My steps are not made
For the winged feet of feasts,
For the bare feet of love."
