Description
Don Ruy Gomez, on the verge of marrying dona Sol, has granted Hernani hospitality, without knowing who he is, or that he and dona Sol love each other. But the truth comes out: Don Ruy Gomez, despite his fury, assures Hernani that he will respect his duty of hospitality at all costs, and has the castle gates locked and guarded. However, the king, Don Carlos, shows up with his troop: how can he be refused entry? Don Ruy Gomez hides Hernani in a secret cabinet concealed by his own portrait, the last portrait in the Silva gallery.
Don Carlos appears before Don Ruy Gomez in the portrait gallery and demands Hernani's head. Dona Sol watches the scene more dead than alive.
"He bows deeply to the king, takes his hand and leads him past the last portrait, the one that serves as the door to the hiding place where he has let Hernani in. Doña Sol anxiously follows him with her eyes. - The audience waits in silence.
This portrait is mine. - King don Carlos, thank you!
For you want us to say when we see him here:
"This last, worthy son of such a high race,
Was a traitor, and sold the head of his host!"
Joy of doña Sol. Movement of astonishment among those present. The King, bewildered, angrily walks away, then remains silent for a few moments, his lips trembling and his eye inflamed."
