Description

Taking advantage of the fact that Roman banquets were eaten lying down on a bed, Thelott transforms the feasting hall into a royal bedchamber. Seated at the foot of Dido's bed, and still holding his staff of command, Aeneas receives a cup of wine from the queen. Ascagne-Cupidon still holds the train of her dress, and two maids bring a dish. On the left, a cupbearer prepares to fill the cup. In the background, two soldiers watch the scene.

All the figures are standing with the exception of Aeneas, who curiously tilts his head, as if to express the overwhelm of remembering the fall of Troy.
