Description
In the left foreground, Dido confides in Anna: Aeneas is about to leave her. In the right background, Aeneas, recognizable by his baton of command, orders the Trojans to prepare for departure.
The scene of confidence to Anna is an invention of Thelott. Virgil evokes a presentiment of Dido, as Aeneas secretly arms his fleet:
At regina dolos (qui fallere possit amantem?)
praesensit, motusque excepit prima futuros... (v. 296-7)
(But how do you deceive someone who loves? The queen immediately sensed the ruse and got wind of what was afoot.)
