Description
History :
- Signed below the engraving on the left "c. p. Marillier dir.", on the right "J. L. De Lignon Scup."
Caption: "Je vous presente le Seigneur Pantalon." - The play is preceded by the following note: "Represented by the Opéra-comique at the Saint-Laurent fair, on September 1, 1721, along with Funérailles de la Foire and its Rappel à la vie. These three plays were performed at the Palais-Royal, by order of S. A. R. Madame, on the following October 2nd.
On August 22nd, the privilege of the Opéra-comique was taken away from the troupe that had it, and given to that of Sieur Francisque, who began his vaudeville performances on the following September 1st.
To acquaint those who are not in the régiment de la calotte with it, they will know that it is a metaphysical regiment, invented by a few playful spirits, who have made themselves its principal officers. They enroll all individuals, nobles and commoners, who distinguish themselves by some marked folly or ridiculous trait. This enrolment is carried out by means of patents in prose or verse, which are carefully distributed throughout the world. But most of these patents are the work of reckless poets, who on their own authority levy people who would dishonor the corps by their merit and wisdom, if the commissioner did not break them at the reviews. (Author's note.)"
