Description
The masked ball ended in the early hours of a cold, snowy February. A Pierrot and a Sauvage fought a duel in the snowy Bois de Boulogne. Pierrot, badly wounded, sword still in hand, is pulled away by his three friends, who take him to the hospital for help if there's still time. One is disguised as the Duc de Guise; the other as a black domino, panicking, his head in his hands; the third, dressed as the Doge of Venice, tries to unbutton his shirt, perhaps to assess the seriousness of his wound. The winner of the duel, disguised as a savage, wanders off to his carriage on the right, accompanied by his witness, a Harlequin.
History :
- Signed and dated lower left: "J.L. GEROME | 1857".
- Exhibited at the 1857 Salon, then in London the same year at the English dealer Gambart. Acquired in 1858 by the Duc d'Aumale. In 1867, the painting was shown at the Exposition Universelle and awarded the Grand Prix de Peinture.
- Thomas Couture treated a similar subject in the same year: his painting, now in London's Wallace Collection, depicts Pierrot and Harlequin conferring with their witnesses before the duel.
